On Sunday I did a wine tour with a French couple for the first time which was exciting since France is pretty much the wine capital of the world. And it didn’t disappoint! The itinerary was as follows:

1. @babylonstoren
2. @bartinney
3. @starkconde
4. @muratiewine

Babylonstoren is a commercial-type winery with plenty of tourists but my guests still liked it because it is unique, beautiful, and a lot of work and attention to detail goes into it.

My guests asked for nice views so Bartinney was a great option but they happened to like the wine as well and they bought MCC and several bottles of Chardonnay.

Then we went to the hidden gem in the stunning Jonkershoek valley in Stellenbosch called Stark Conde. My guests loved the views as they enjoyed their tasting on the lake.

For the last stop, we went to Muratie because my guests were interested in tradition but in the end, we enjoyed the view of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head in the distance with a couple of glasses of wine and an interesting conversation rather than tradition. Good times! 🍷🍇⛰️🧀🥖🫏

Last week Thursday I did another amazing Cape Peninsula tour with three guests from the Netherlands.

The itinerary was a slight variation of the standard one because we stopped at the ostrich farm at Cape Point for some comical feeding of the ostriches and at Kalk Bay we also went to the harbour for a close encounter with a sea lion.

This tour probably had the most wildlife encounters of any tour I’ve ever done. We saw penguins, dassies, ostriches, giant tortoises, baboons, and a sea lion.

I love animals and animal encounters are definitely one of my favourite things about the Cape Peninsula tour. I got very close to some penguins at an area outside of Boulders Beach and also to the sea lion at Kalk Bay.

I think my guests also enjoyed our wildlife encounters very much and I liked that they were keen on seeing wildlife. Thank you! 🙏🏻🌊⛰️🐧☀️🦭

Last week Tuesday I did a fantastic Cape Peninsula tour with a couple from the UK.

We did the standard itinerary of Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Kalk Bay, and Chapman’s Peak.

One of my guests made a really cute video of a penguin and at Cape Point we had a very cool sighting of some birds floating on the strong wind and enjoying themselves.

In Kalk Bay my guests ate at the @brassbellkalkbay and then walked around in the buzzing town visiting some of the shops.

Everything flowed nicely and we completed the tour in exactly 8 hours which is the standard time of a full day tour! ☀️⛰️🐧🌊🍤

On Saturday I did a wine tour with @constantinmerk, @emil_denk, and Luke from Germany which was very enjoyable and unlike any tour I’ve done before.

My guests preferred white wine and rosé which already made this a unique tour since I don’t think anyone ever had that preference. At least not everyone in the group. This meant I would have to set up a very different itinerary from what I usually do which excited me:

1. @simonsigwines MCC tasting
2. @kleinezalze wine tasting
3. @fatbutcher_sa lunch
4. @lavenir_wine_estate wine tasting

I really liked Simonsig when I discovered it on my previous wine tour so I put it in again but the other stops were all a first for my wine tours. I think Simonsig is the best for MCC and they are also the pioneers of MCC in South Africa having produced the first MCC. The nice thing is that they also have still wines which gives you more options. And they offer charcuterie boards too which my guests enjoyed with their wine.

The next stop was fitting for this tour as it was founded in 1695 by a German called Nicholas Cleef. They had plenty of white wine options and their bread is a big winner which my guests ordered again with their wine.

Then it was off to the famous Fat Butcher which I added to the itinerary because my guests asked for meat. It was the first time I scheduled a lunch that was not at a winery and what a treat that was. My extremely generous guests offered to buy me lunch there which I enjoyed immensely.

For the final stop, we went to L’avenir which was another great option for white wine. Once again I was impressed by the Germans’ tolerance for alcohol.

Maybe it’s because I’m of German descent myself but I always had a great time with Germans on my tours and enjoyed their company immensely. And they are always super friendly and generous. Thanks guys! 🙏🏻🍷🍇⛰️🥖🥩

On Saturday I did a wine tour with two guests from the UK. The itinerary was as follows:

1. @simonsigwines MCC tasting
2. @rainbowsendwine wine tasting
3. @la_petiteferme lunch
4. @babylonstoren wine tasting

I have never been to Simonsig myself and it turned out to be a great stop for an MCC tasting as they were in fact the first producer of MCC in South Africa. The setting was very nice too.

Next we went to Rainbow’s End because one of my guests likes red wine and they just loved this wine tasting location with the majestic views.

For lunch it was at the iconic La Perite Ferme with its great food, stunning views, and friendly service.

We ended at @babylonstoren where my guests liked the wine but they were not interested in exploring the rest of the estate so we headed home.

On Tuesday I did an exclusive and off the beaten track wine tour with two super nice guests @dlord_ and @jamie.lutz.6 from Washington DC to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The itinerary was as follows:

1. Cellar tour with wine tasting at @bouchardfinlayson.
2. Wine tasting at @spookfonteinwines.
3. Food and wine pairing at @creationwines.
4. Wine tasting at @benguelacove.

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley takes a bit longer to reach than Stellenbosch but it is well worth the drive because it’s a special and unique wine region which specialises mostly in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but has other great wines too.

The cellar tour at @bouchardfinlayson is unique because it is done by the assistant wine maker and the cellar just looks really cool. And the wine is great too.

@spookfonteinwines was a first for me and me and my guests loved the wine tasting area, the wine, and the view from the restaurant.

@creationwines is number three in the world for a reason. They have a broad selection of great wine and the restaurant where my guests had a food and wine pairing is pretty special too.

We ended at @benguelacove because that is outside of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley on the way home. There my guests enjoyed another wine tasting on the swing chairs overlooking the spectacular views next to the lagoon.

This was one of the best wine tours I’ve done. The itinerary was spot on I think and my guests got to experience something unique and special.

On Sunday I did a Cape Peninsula tour with George from London, UK. The itinerary was the standard one of:

1. Boulders Beach
2. Cape Point
3. Kalk Bay
4. Chapmans Peak

We got to Boulders Beach early to skip the queue and then headed to Cape Point where we skipped most of the queue again.

George took the funicular up to the lighthouse while I waited for him below. On our way out of the Cape Point nature reserve we spotted some elands which was a nice sighting.

Then we headed to Kalk Bay for some of @chardonnay_deli famous cheesecake and a stroll around the vibey town.

Finally, it was back home over Chapmans Peak to complete another enjoyable tour to some of the most beautiful areas Cape Town has to offer.

On Saturday I did a wine tour with @juno56 from California, US. The itinerary was as follows:

1. @hautecabriere MCC tasting
2. @kanonkopwineestate wine tasting
3. @alluviaboutiquewinery lunch
4. @babylonstoren wine tasting

Janis bought some pinotage from Kanonkop in the US which she liked so she asked me to include Kanonkop in her itinerary. The rest was up to me.

As usual we started with the MCC tasting and this time I opted for Haute Cabriere who is known for its Pierre Jordan range. They were nice enough to give us a quick cellar tour as well.

Next was Kanonkop which Janis really enjoyed and she bought some wine as well. I also liked it and will definitely take guests there in the future who wants to taste pinotage.

For lunch I chose Alluvia where hamburger and pizza seemed fitting given where my guest came from. Janis loved the beautiful view from the deck.

For the final stop we went to Babylonstoren as Janis also wanted to visit some commercial wineries. There she did another tasting and we walked around in the beautiful botanical gardens.

On Thursday I did a Cape Peninsula tour with couple from the Netherlands @femkevdwerf_ and Maduka. The itinerary was:

1. Boulders Beach 🐧🌊
2. Cape Point ⛰️🌊
3. Kalk Bay 🍴🌊
4. Chapmans Peak ⛰️🌊

There are other possibilities on the Cape Peninsula tour but this itinerary in this particular order seems to work best.

Boulders Beach has the longest queues so it’s best to start there to avoid wasting time and Cape Point has the second longest queues so going there afterwards is best.

We saw some amazing wildlife on this tour including four different baboon sightings and one of a highly venomous boomslang snake.

My guests enjoyed a good meal at @brassbellkalkbay and afterwards we headed for coffee and delicious cheesecake at @chardonnay_deli.

Finally we headed back home over Chapmans Peak for more beautiful scenery in the most beautiful city in the world.

Last Saturday I did a wine tour with four Germans @_ferdinandp, @hanni_sim, @michaellindner89, and @sina_diaz. The itinerary was as follows:

1. MCC tasting at @bartinney.
2. Wine and cheese pairing at @fairviewwineandcheese.
3. Lunch at @la_petiteferme.
4. Wine tasting at @starkconde.

The MCC tasting seems to be a good way to start my tours now as 10am is a bit early for most people to start drinking wine and no better place to do so than Bartinney with its stunning views.

Next my guests asked for a wine and cheese pairing before lunch as opposed to others who have preferred it after lunch. My guests finished all the cheese which was good to see as well as several mini baguettes which came from Fairview’s own bakery.

The third stop was lunch as usual and as has been the case on recent wine tours it was at La Petite Ferme with its fine dining and spectacular views of Franschhoek.

Finally, we drove through the town of Stellenbosch to Stark Conde in the Jonkershoek area which is known for producing high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and more beautiful views. My guests enjoyed some of the flagship reds here and advised me to offer it to future guests which I will definitely do.

This was easily one of my favourite tours I have done so far and that didn’t surprise me after the Cape Peninsula tour I did with @_ferdinandp and @hanni_sim. This time their friends joined us whose company I very much enjoyed as well.

We just vibed from the start and as a result everything worked out perfectly. It’s going to be hard to improve on the two tours I did with the Germans but improvement is what it is all about and especially with the wine tours there is so much to know and experience that improvement is certainly possible.

Yesterday I did one of my favourite Cape Peninsula tours yet with German couple @_ferdinandp and Hannah.

We started earlier than usual at 8am and headed to Boulders Beach which allowed us to skip the long queues of the holiday season.

Same at @capepointsa where we enjoyed the hikes to the lighthouse and further down the point.

Next we made a quick stop at the Cape Point ostrich farm and then we headed off to Kalk Bay for a stroll around the buzzing town and some delicious cheesecake and coffee at @chardonnay_deli.

Finally we headed to Chapmans Peak drive for more beautiful scenery.

On Monday I did an exclusive wine tour to the Hemel-en-Aarde valley with a couple from Canada.

The itinerary was as follows:

1. @bouchardfinlayson wine tasting
2. @newtonjohnsonfamilyvineyards wine tasting
3. Hamilton Russell Vinyards wine tasting
4. @creationwines lunch

The Hemel-en-Aarde valley is a special wine region that makes some of the finest Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc in the world.

Due to the terroir(soil, climate, topography) it produces some of the best wines in the world in general and the area is also host to 1500 species of Fynbos which is the indigenous flora in South Africa.

It’s a beautiful place with fantastic wines and I hope to do more tours there in the future!

On the 19th of December I did a wine tour with a couple who lives in Spain.

The itinerary was as follows:

1. Villiera MCC tasting
2. Rainbow’s End wine tasting
3. La Petite Ferme lunch
4. Babylonstoren walk through

Villiera is known for producing some of the best MCC in SA and my guests tasted 5 different MCCs.

Rainbow’s End is known for producing some of the best Cabernet Franc in the country and my guests were thoroughly impressed by their award winning Cabernet Franc in one of the most beautiful settings in Stellenbosch.

Next it was off to La Petite Ferme which is turning out to be a great stop for lunch on my wine tours. Again my guests loved the food and the amazing view of Franschoek from the restaurant.

Finally we stopped at Babylonstoren where my guests chose not to do a tasting and decided to rather walk through the estate and enjoy the many shops, gardens, and animals 🦃🍷🍇⛰️☀️

Saturday I did a wine tour with three Australian men and a Thai woman.

It’s only the second time I did a tour with four people and it was one of my favourite tours so far. The more the merrier I guess!

The Australians were very nice people but also honest and direct which I appreciated. And they were a lot of fun.

They bought wine at every wine estate we visited and they clearly knew their wine which already made things interesting. Each of them also graded the wine they tasted out of ten and they bought the wines that scored the highest. Their process fascinated me.

In a way it was serious because they knew wine and wasn’t just going to buy anything but at the same time they knew how to enjoy themselves and have a good time. It was a good mix.

The itinerary was as follows:

2. Tasting at @bartinney
3. Lunch at @la_petiteferme
4. Wine and cheese pairing at @fairviewwineandcheese

My guests had a lot of good things to say about my tour which meant a lot to me because they weren’t the types to sugarcoat things and I regard them as wine experts.

Last Monday I did a Cape Peninsula tour with Nick from Washington State, US.

As usual we started at Cape Point to avoid the many tourists who keep increasing as the day progresses. We saw a big group of baboons on our way there which was a good start.

After Cape Point we did Boulders Beach and then we headed for some snacks and a beer as we overlooked the Atlantic Ocean at @capetocubarestaurant.

For the last stop we drove over Chapmans Peak for more beautiful views and another scenic drive through Hout Bay and around the coast through the Atlantic Seaboard and back towards the city.

On Sunday I did a wine tour with @matthewjb03, @courtneymarierocks, and Andrew who are all from the UK.

The itinerary was as follows:

1. An MCC/sparkling tasting at @houseofjcleroux.

2. A wine and cheese pairing at @fairviewwineandcheese.

3. Lunch followed by a wine and chocolate pairing at the home of Pinotage @lanzeracestate.

4. Bonus stop at Stellenbosch Wine Bar.

It was my first time at J. C. le Roux and I liked it so now I have a second option together with Villiera when people request a sparkling tasting.

At Fairview we had to wait about an hour for the tasting because they don’t take bookings but we just sat in the restaurant for some coffee and snacks until we could get in. My guests agreed that it was well worth the wait which made me happy because it’s a tasting that I personally enjoy a lot. And of course the goats just ad extra charm to the place.

At Lanzerac we ate lunch in the delicatessen which really has some delicious food followed by a wine and chocolate pairing which I think is another very enjoyable pairing and of course includes their famous pinotage which was first bottled at Lanzerac.

We ended the trip with an unscheduled stop in the Stellenbosch town centre at Stellenbosch Wine Bar which is always a fun way to conclude my tours.

I haven’t done a wine tour in a while and had forgotten how much fun they were. Thank you to my guests for being flexible and fun to be around! 🍷🧀🐐🥂🍫🍇

Last week I did a Cape Peninsula tour with a couple from Georgia, US.

As usual we started with the stunning scenery of @capepointsa where we were also fortunate to see some baboons.

Then we headed to Simon’s Town where my guests enjoyed observing the charismatic penguins of Boulders Beach.

From Simon’s Town we drove back towards the city over @chapmanspeakdrive where we stopped at the lookout point to take some more photos and enjoy the view.

Finally we drove through Hout Bay towards the beautiful coastal road of the Atlantic Seaboard all the way back to the @vandawaterfront where I dropped off my guests and later picked them up again after grabbing lunch and doing some exploring.

Today I did a Cape Peninsula tour with a mother and daughter from California.

The weather wasn’t great but fortunately they only wanted to go to Boulders beach so we added some other stops instead of the usual destinations.

They wanted to go to an open market so I suggested Oranjezicht farmers market which they loved.

They also wanted to visit a chocolate shop so I suggested @afrikoachocolate at the Cape Town cruise ship terminal which they also loved.

Finally, they wanted to have sushi for lunch so I recommended @willoughbyandcowaterfront which is great for sushi but also just seafood in general.

I enjoyed mixing things up and using my knowledge of Cape Town to make some recommendations which my guests seemed to enjoy very much! 🐧🍫🍣🌊⛰️

Yesterday I did a Cape Peninsula tour with a honeymoon couple from Miami. The itinerary was as follows:

• Cape Point
• Cape Point ostrich farm
• Boulders Beach penguin colony
• Chapmans Peak

The weather was perfect for this tour which is always important for the stunning scenery and it was the first time we did a proper visit to the ostrich farm where we did a short educational tour.

Apart from the ostriches they have a surprising number of cool reptiles including snakes, crocodiles, iguanas, and lizards. The baby ostriches were very cute and as an animal lover I enjoyed this tour very much.

Definitely a great stop to add to future Cape Peninsula tours! 🐧⛰️🌊🐍🐊🦎☀️

Chapmans peak was unfortunately closed due to rock falls but we got perfect weather for this scenic tour which is quite rare currently.

Instead of Chapmans peak we added Muizenberg beach which my guests enjoyed a lot and we ended at Kirstenbosch which was a first for me on a Cape Peninsula tour.

My guests were stunned by the incredible scenery in Cape Town and their only regret was that they didn’t have more than two days but they already started making plans to come back! 🌊⛰️🐧🌳☺️🌲☀️🏖️

Last Monday I did a wine tour with a couple from Paris. The itinerary included:

• @babylonstoren
• @rainbowsendwine
• @rustenvrede1694
• @starkconde
• A walk in Stellenbosch town centre.

Rust-en-Vrede was a new stop which I had never been to myself but which I heard a lot about. It is very popular because of their main restaurant which is apparently fully booked months in advance but fortunately there is a restaurant which is open from 12-3pm where no booking is required and where they serve salmon or fillet steak with a glass of wine. Very convenient for a wine tour!

My guests had their fill of wine by the time we reached Stark Conde so instead of doing a tasting I took them on a short tour in the Stellenbosch town centre where I grew up!
